Mariners Blockbuster Signals an Aggressive New Tone in Seattle

The Seattle Mariners appear to have abandoned their desire to rebuild, and have reportedly pulled off a massive blockbuster with the Chicago Cubs. According to multiple reports, the deal would net Seattle veteran 1B Dean Abernathy in return for reliever Trinidad Romero and 3 prospects. Abernathy, 29, is in his 4th year with the Cubs, and has 15 home runs and 42 RBI in 66 games this season. He provides a much needed power boost to a struggling Mariners' offense. Romero, 30, has been one of the M's best relievers the past few seasons, but struggled in spring training. Due to the talent in the Seattle bullpen, he has been relegated to AAA Tacoma for most of the year. In a call up due to an injury to 1B Eugene Patterson, he appeared in 4 games, and posted a 1.50 ERA, but allowed 6 hits in 6 innings. The three prospects are reportedly shortstop Carlos Abreu, centerfielder Ki Toga-Mi, and pitcher Stephen Krasinski. Krasinski, 21, and Toga-Mi, 22, have yet to log any time in the majors, and Abreu, also 22, has appeared in 13 career games, and has 3 hits in 25 at bats, with one double and an RBI.
